Lolly Vegas, Co-Founder of Redbone

Music Group, succumbs.

Redbone members (left to right) include Patrick Vegas,

Tony Bellamy, Lolly Vegas, and Pete "Walking Bear" DePoe

Right on the heels of news that Bobby Espinosa, musician extraordinaire and co-founder of the legendary EL CHICANO band, had passed away on February 27, 2010, another renowned Chicano musician has died as well.

According to fellow musicians Mark Guerrero and Robert  Zapata,  both informed that the legendary REDBONE band co-founder, Lolly Vegas, passed away at his home in the San Fernando Valley, California at 1:00 AM on Thursday, March 4, 2010.  He had been battling cancer for many years.

Guerrero, who has written many articles and chronicled the stories of Chicano music legends for years, states that the original founders of REDBONE included brothers Lolly and Patrick Vegas who grew up in Fresno, California. The two Mexican American musicians (who changed their last name to Vegas from Vasquez  early in their career) started their musical journey touring with the band of former teen idol, Jimmy Clanton.  Patrick Vegas played bass and vocals, and Lolly Vegas played guitar and vocals with Clanton, who recorded two major hits, Just a Dream and Venus in Blue Jeans, in the late 50.s.

Redbone plays primarily rock music with R&B, Cajun, Jazz, tribal, and Latin roots. Their first commercial success came with the single Maggie from their second album, Potlatch, in 1970, and two other hit singles followed: The Witch Queen of New Orleans (1971, #21 on the Billboard Hot 100) and Come and Get Your Love (1974, #5 on the Billboard Hot 100). Come and Get Your Love, written by Lolly Vegas stayed on the Billboard chart for 24 weeks, and was awarded a gold disc by the R.I.A.A. on 22 April 1974. Both Guerrero and Zapata have performed with Redbone on many occasions.

A special memorial service for Lolly Vegas will be held on Thursday, March 11, 2010 at Lorenzen Mortuary, 19300 Sherman Way, Reseda, California  91335, beginning at 7:30pm. Friend and acclaimed actress and singer Della Reese will deliver the eulogy.

Google? Shame, Shame, Shame! You Will Soon Reap What You Sow!

February 28, 2010

Google? Shame, Shame, Shame! You Will Soon Reap What You Sow!

I was hacked big time around February 19 or 20th of 2010!

I didn’t say my computer was hacked because when you are a victim of this most vicious crime it affects not only your computer, but your business, colleagues, friends and family members, and especially your heart and soul.
If you became involved in the Internet to promote your product (your book, music, artwork, health formula or that unique wisdom you want to share with the public) one of the things you need the most is to trust the Internet facilitator you have chosen. When the facilitator let’s you down and can’t (or won’t) provide you an easy to use process to remedy the attack, it adds insult to the injury.

Like most of your average “Joe’s and Jane’s” who can’t afford fancy and costly web sites, we find ourselves using the “groups” web sites that are provided by many of the major cyber giants such as Blogger, Google Groups and other “free” (develop your own web) sites’ providers in cyberspace. Those of us who chose to go this route (and there are millions) usually have an email address associated with the web site or blog that was initially provided by the Google’s of the world. Most of us end up using that email address as our master email account (to cut down on the confusion that comes from having too many email addresses) and we use it to log into many social network media accounts, as well as your bank accounts and other personal sites that request an email address so they can contact you with pertinent information. This works for some people, others choose to have varying email addresses for different purposes. So be it!
Nevertheless, when you have become a victim of a hacker, and especially when the culprit uses your email address not just to send out SPAM, but who cleverly uses it to prey on innocent people and extort them of their hard-earned dollars, you would think your cyberspace facilitator would have an instant remedy built into their system to stem this pernicious ploy.
Cyberspace experts (or at least we believe they are experts) can design programs that even a few years ago would be unimaginable. But they can’t develop a remedy to this problem. Now, mind you, we are not talking here about programs to prevent annoying SPAM and pop ups, we are talking about activity that is so heinously blatant that it ranks (or should) right up there with burglary and even rape!
The home protection industry has ingeniously devised security alarm systems that respond within seconds if any burglar or rapist tries to invade your home. But Google, one of the Internet giants has not been able to devise a rapid response program when one of their clients gets hacked. Instead, they have a process that requires filling out questionnaires that ask the most stupid and innocuous questions solely to verify if you are really the owner of that email address. They ask you questions such as “when did you sign up” with Gmail?” Who referred you to Gmail? What is your “temporary question?” Why? Do we really believe hackers are going to go directly to Google to access other people’s email addresses? And to top this off, their captcha letters are so distorted and bunched together that even if you provided the correct password to your email address, it will kick you back. There is more, but suffice it to say that those who have experienced this idiocy recognize what I speak of.
Am I solely one of a few people who have this problem? Lol!
You have no idea how rampant this problem is; yet the Google techno nerds who should have solved this problem many a long tiime ago, have chosen to ignore this; they are too busy trying to impress their bosses with their cute new programs that have nothing to do with Google client services, seeking compliments from them, those mid-level managers who are themselves too busing raking in millions of dollars from their Ad Sense programs, among others, to impress their bosses and investors.

Read some of the complaints:

On Monday morning December 14, 2009 around 4 AM ET my Gmail account was hacked and a message "about being stranded in London, UK, lost my credit cards etc. please help" A phone number and location were added. In addition, the cracker deleted the archive, so I’ve lost everything. I have been trying to contact Google to determine if they can restore the archive.

Do you believe this is a small scale hack?.

On Thursday morning December 17, 2009 around 8AM ET, my gmail account was also hacked and two messages "emergency situation" and "I am really in need of your help" have been sent out to everyone whom I have ever e-mailed to from this account. I was apparently mugged by gunpoint in London, UK and needed $2500 wired to Western Union. This criminal changed my password, deleted my archive & contact list so I couldn’t easily inform everyone to ignore these e-mails, had my e-mails forwarded to another gmail created in my name & similar to my real account so I couldn’t see what was going on, and corresponded with a friend who responded with Western Union information. I reported this to google and Western Union in London.

What more should I do?

Same happened to me, but I’m unable to access my account and I’m unable to reset my password. GMail is unwilling to help.

There you have it Google, just a small sampling of the thousands upon thousands of your clients who are being hacked (and emotionally raped) while you continuously ignore this major problem.

Sadly, Google, I must inform you that you folks (unfortunately) will suffer economically in the long run. Soon, you will see your stock plummeting downward and, when it does, you will know the reason why. Not because of the current economic problems this country is suffering from; because great companies always prosper even during economic crisis when they do the right thing. Your downward plight will be because, Google, like so many other companies who focus more on the bottom line than on quality service, you will reap what you sow! As is stated in Bible (Galatians 6:7) Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.

Now, just in case any Google employees happen to read this, I am inserting the email address that was hacked. I have no fear that millions of other folks will have access to this email address. I can’t access it, Google won’t help me solve this problem, there is no one to speak to personally about this problem at Google headquarters, and besides, there is a guy in London, England already who is now in control of my email and to this day and he (or she) is still hustling hundreds of other people of their hard-earned dollars, mainly because Google didn’t have the intestinal fortitude to solve this problem a long time ago.

Do You Really Know Your Bible? (The End Times Passover)

February 27, 2010

Do You Really Know Your Bible? You may be surprised with what it really says about the End Times, the Rapture, the 1000 Year Millennium, and who truly constitutes the Children of God!

        Joe Ortiz
News Reporter, Newspaper
Columnist, Radio-Television
Talk Show Host, Author, and
Servant of Christ!

It took over 25 years of deep, extensive Bible study to discover factual data that differs from what many people believe is sacred doctrine. Much of this work included using an etymological and a figures of speech study approach to reaching a more indepth meaning to many words in the Bible we take for granted. The answers to some of the following statements and questions may shock you, but we can provide factual biblical data to prove the statements below are true.
Did you know that the state of Israel is not The Promised Land?
Did you know that many Christians today are already turning their back on Jesus Christ?
Did you know that non-Christ believing Jews are not God’s ‘Children of Promise?’
Did you know that many ‘right-wing evangelicals’ are promoting the Gospel of Zionism, which is not biblical?
Did you know that New Jerusalem (the Bride of the Lamb) is not the church?

Did you know that Jesus Christ’s reign on earth will be for more than 1000 years?

Did you know that when you die you don’t immediately go to Heaven or Hell?

Did you know that the Rapture does not include a trip to Heaven?

Did you know that mansions in God’s house are not housing compartments for Christians?

Did you know that Heaven is not the final destination of Christians?

Did you know the church of God existed before Jesus was physically born?

Did you know The Great White Throne Judgment will be held here on earth?

Did you know that God and New Jerusalem come down to earth together when Jesus returns?

Did you know that Christians will be on earth when God pours out His wrath on unbelievers?

Did you know Christians will not experience God’s wrath but they will suffer Great Tribulation?

Did you know many Christian will accept the mark of the beast 666 to escape death?

Did you know that many Christians today are already turning their back on Jesus Christ?

Did you know that those left behind are forgiven and those taken are unrepentant sinners?

Did you know there is more false religion being preached today than ever in history?

Most people reading this are probably saying “Hog Wash” ~ but it’s true!

Those people who promote the Left Behind and Pre-Tribulation Rapture doctrines have seduced the majority of Christianity into believing they will escape tribulation, and they do this solely to gain large profits by publishing the provocative "Left Behind" doctrines!  They also use these supposed Christian precepts to influence governments throughout the world to support the rich and powerful ‘money-changers’ ~ heathen factions in the Middle East, with military might, to conquer various nations and to one day gain complete control of the entire world.

If you want or need biblical proof of all the statements above, read The End Times Passover  and Why Christians Will Suffer Great Tribulation,  two  new books by Joe Ortiz, a former radio and television talk show host, who began writing these two books in 1984, over twenty five years ago, but did not publish them until 2006. During the time in between, he spent hours, days, weeks, months and years checking and rechecking the information, over and over again, to make sure the evidence he presents in these two amazing books was biblically correct!
Attention Bible Teachers: You don’t want to teach anything about the End Times until you first read these two books!
First and foremost, we

Speak out for those who cannot speak,
for the rights of all the destitute.
Speak out, judge righteously, and

defend the rights of the poor and needy.

Why Church Membership Is Down

July 27, 2009

Why Church Membership Is On the Decline

By Joe Ortiz

Every day we keep hearing how church
membership is on the decline and many reasons are given. One international
church leader stated that “
the church is being hit by a double
whammy on the one hand it confronts the challenge of institutional decline but
on the other hand it has to face the rise of cultural and religious pluralism.”

This may be true to an extent, the
cultural war between those who viewed themselves as God-loving, God-living,
conservative and moral Americans and non-beliers is rising faster than gasoline
prices. They (conservative Christians) have viewed those at the opposite end of
the spectrum (gays, minorities, liberals, Democrats) as the heathen, ungodly
and primarily responsible for the moral decline in America. In fact (at least from a
political point of view) the right-wing evangelical, moral majority folks are
the ones who opened the door to the left-wing agenda, by extolling a holier
than thou presence in the predominate community. Many of them (conservative
leaders in government and the church) represent the amoral majority which has
been felled by sex and financial scandals. Therefore, adopting and promoting
conservative GOP candidates to run the government is obviously not the answer,
either, anymore than electing liberal, progressive non-believers, all of which
(GOP and Democrats alike) cater to and bow before the throne of greed and
profit, rather than serving the people.

What most church leaders have not accepted (although they preach
this sermon all the time) is that we all sin and fall short of the glory of
God. But yet, most church members focus solely on walking around with their
Bible in hand, spewing
moral epithets at the weaker segments
of the community. Sadly, most preachers and pastors nowadays do not clearly
understand what God wants from them, and it’s more than merely playing church
(as non-believers view the antics of the electronic church, especially). By
“playing church, I mean the “show time” aspect of most churches in today’s
America, the ones who use the latest Christian rock and roll group, amazing
singers, greatly gifted orators with tongue-filled “how-to-get-rich” sermons.
Those churches who have been competing for the same lost souls that are being
drawn away by new age gurus, secular celebrities (the list is too long to
mention, although Brittany Spears, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Paris Hilton, et
al come to mind), Ipods, cell phones and Blu-Ray technology. Those same
churches that have turned to secular marketers and fund raising experts to
develop the latest mailer programs to raise funds; or the so-called “Christian
Growth Programs” being pedaled through ads on the Internet and in Christian
magazines, are not only feeling the financial pinch of membership decline, they
have failed their true missions.

Where the church has failed is not by
not being creative enough to draw the younger set with the latest
youth-oriented  sounds (rap, punk, heavy
metal) disguised as Christian entertainment, nor such novelty acts like
muscular and handsome young men lifting weights, or the latest so-called
Christian writer with a new (and prosperous) twist to the Bible. No! Church
leaders have failed the young and older regular pew patients by not showing
them how, nor directing them to the source of increase, who can deliver new and
or prosperous members: Worshipping God!

My favorite Christian author, A.W.
Tozer, sums it (declining church membership thusly:

people who have to have truckloads of gadgets to get their
religion going, what will they do when they don’t
have anything
like that? The truck can’t get where they’re

I heard a man boast this afternoon on the radio to
come to his
place because they were going to bring in
equipment from
Pennsylvania and Ohio
to serve the Lord with. What equipment do
you need to serve the Lord with, brother? Why, the
dear old camp
meeting ladies used to say, "See, this is my
harp with ten strings
and I praise the Lord!" And they’d clap their
little old wrinkled
hands with shining faces. What claptrap do you
need? Do you need a
bushel basket full of stuff to serve the Lord

Brother, if you have two knees and even if you’re
stiffened up
with arthritis so you can’t get on your knees, you
can look up in
your heart. For prayer isn’t getting on your
knees–prayer is the
elevation of the heart to God. That’s all a man
needs. You can
pray in a prison, you can pray in an airplane, you
can pray in a
ship; you can pray anywhere and you can worship
God, because it’s
Himself that we want, Himself.

Hopefully, soon, the Christian
community will come to its senses and quit denying the power of God to sustain
their lives and embolden their respective fellowship by focusing on Him rather than
tried and failed secularist oriented means to worship God. The church we have
known (especially the one in the last 50 years) is one filled with “style”
rather than substance. God did not say he would bless the largest or the fanciest
church organization in town
. He

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves and
pray, and seek my face and
turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will
their land.

Obama Does Not Know His Bible

June 27, 2008

Obama’s 20 Years in Reverend Wright’s Church

Produced little knowledge of the Bible

by joe ortiz

Barack Obama has opened himself to more embarrassment about his lack of Bible knowledge, which was revealed during his defensive remarks while fending off criticism by Dr. James Dobson. I don’t know if the public received (and or read) the entire story of Obama’s fisticuffing verbiage; but his remarks about the Sermon on the Mount left him exposed to much more criticism by learned Bible scholars.

Quoting the article by SARA KUGLER Associated Press Writer, which also ran on ABC News on June 24, 2008, Obama also cited Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, “a passage that is so radical that it’s doubtful that our own Defense Department would survive its application?" Obama went on to say,” Folks haven’t been reading their Bibles," Obama said in the speech.

Wrong Barack! Many of us read it daily!

Christian students, professors, preachers and authors of Christian theology know full well that the Sermon on the Mount makes bold statements, such as that there will be perilous times preceding the return of Christ; that certain signs will be prevalent that the end is near, that there will be wars, and rumors of wars, earthquakes in diverse places, false prophets will rise, mankind’s hearts will grow cold towards one another, and persecution against Christians that has not been seen since the beginning of time, but will soon prevail. The majority of Christians are aware of the warnings Jesus gave his disciples while giving His Sermon on the Mount, and as “radical” as that may seem to some politicians and military leaders, it is a fact that most well-informed Christians believe and take very seriously.

If Barack Obama was a “spirit-filled” Christian, he would know that the Sermon on the Mount description of the last days will become a reality, and that neither a president nor a queen nor all the armies of the world will be able to withstand this apocalyptic reality.

Shame on Barack Obama! He, a parishioner of Reverend Wright’s Church for over twenty years, but has learned very little of what most parishioners know to be the biblical truth. What was he doing during all of those righteous sermons he heard by Reverend Wright? Did he not attend any of the Bible studies they offered? Didn’t he devote some off time to reading and studying his Bible, as he accuses? Or was he too busy kissing little babies and hand selling future votes?

Swatting away criticism by learned theologians like Dr. James Dodson, by dissing the Gospel as being “so radical” that it should not be taken seriously, may sway a legion of Obama supporters; but millions of American Christians who know the truth are now amazed at how little Bible knowledge a professing Christian of over 20 years should know by now.

Most Bible knowledgeable Christians are fast recognizing that Obama’s sermonic rhetoric has lost most of its steam, revealing a typical smooth-talking establishment politician, who himself has become so deluded by lap dog praise emanating from pundits who should know the difference between change we can believe in or another example of barrio and ghetto sham.

Unfortunately, as many of us predicted (who at first were impressed with his call for change we can believe in), Obama’s messianic robe is falling and its crimson color is fading to a squalid gray, only to reveal “another fancy-suited politician” out of many that have paraded themselves for decades on the hustings of America, bellowing out soothing myths and snake oil promises that they believe will solve our problems.

Talking about Media Won’t Let the Frito Bandito Die Gracefully

June 23, 2008

Media Won’t Let the Frito Bandito Die Gracefully

One of the major responsibilities of journalists is to present their reports as fair and as accurate as possible. As a Latino, I have also undertaken the personal task of holding our industry accountable for more positive portrayals of Mexicans.

One of those battles included forcing the removal of the Frito Bandito television commercials several decades ago. For those who don’t remember the Frito Bandito, it was a television commercial created by the Frito-Lay company that pictured a sombrero-wearing, mustached, gun-slinging Mexican character selling corn chips.

The Frito Bandito became a rallying cry for Chicano activists in the 70’s who opposed the negative image it portrayed of Mexicans. Many of us (including organizations like Nosotros, Chicano News Media Association, Imagen Foundation, and others) have worked hard throughout the years to ensure media paint at least a more dignified image of Latinos. It has been a long struggle to eradicate these negative images from the US technological vista.

This stereotypical dilemma reared its ugly head again when I recently saw the movie Pancho Villa, starring Antonio Banderas. The HBO Pictures movie does portray a more honorable Pancho Villa than history has presented. According to this movie, Pancho Villa supposedly contacts a motion picture company in New Jersey to send a crew to film several battles of his revolutionary exploits in exchange for gold to shore up his efforts to liberate Mexico from corrupt land barons and government officials. Enter master filmmaker D.W. Griffith and a cadre of his financial supporters who try to take cinema to a whole new level.

Supposedly they make history by shooting the first movie to ever contain live combat. Supposedly the deal between Villa and the moviemakers resulted in a film called The Life of General Villa. Supposedly, Villa became a cultural sensation in the US, giving both filmmakers and Villa the acclaim they desperately sought. Interestingly, a quick cursory glance at the scant websites on the Internet reveals nothing about Pancho Villa ever being involved in any movie deals. HBO doesn’t tell us the movie is a factual account that Villa was ever involved in such a project, but does make an interesting disclaimer at the beginning movie: “The improbability of events depicted in this film is the surest indication they actually did occur.” The movie ends with a narrative stating that no record exists this movie (The Life of General Villa) was ever made.

The movie does highlight several honorable images of Pancho Villa, whose main thrust is the liberation of Mexico and its people from corrupt government officials. Villa is seen raiding (and killing some) greedy land barons, taking over great amounts of property from them and distributing the wealth to the poor. Banderas (as Villa) portrays a man bent on turning around the misfortunes of the poor. It shows him valiantly toppling from their ivory towers those greedy and corrupt land owners who were obviously in cahoots with Mexican government officials.

The truth about Pancho Villa’s life has been muddied by much fantasy and rumor, more than recorded facts. The Mexican government supposedly expunged any official records of Villa; they even went as far as ordering an official edict that anything to do with Pancho Villa (statues, paintings, personal record, etc.) be destroyed. Even mentioning his name was forbidden.

What little (official) recorded history there is about Pancho Villa, it most certainly flatters little his antagonists, one of which was General Jack Pershing, who left Mexico empty handed after trying for months to capture the so-called “notorious bandito.” Even President Wilson refused to intervene and send troops into Mexico, despite outrage in Washington over the Santa Ysabel massacre, one of Villa’s “in your face, gringo” battles.

Villa obviously was a thorn in the side of both US and Mexican governments, whose clandestine relationships were (and have historically) been orchestrated by the money changers of the world. Rumors still persist that both countries collaborated in his assassination in 1923.

No one seems to have an officially accurate account of Villa’s life, but many have tried to tell his true story, including Friedrich Katz, in his tome entitled The Life and Times of Pancho Villa. However, my main concern is not necessarily the accuracy of Villa’s life, but rather its depiction.

After watching the movie, Mexican and Mexican Americans can walk away with a certain degree of pride. However, the patronizingly characterization of Mexico and Mexicans the US movie industry is historically known for, were virtually in your face throughout this movie. We could have done without one of the lines delivered by Michael McKean (who played the part of the guy directing the shoot in Mexico:

“Oh, don’t worry about using too much make-up on those Mexicans; you know they always sweat.”

While the movie tried to project a valiant and courageous Villa and his great love for his country, he was nevertheless still pictured as a grubby, unkempt, greasy-looking, womanizing degenerate. Funny, most of the real pictures I’ve seen of Villa show him in regal generalismo garb; but then again, those who lead a charge against their foes, with sword and blazing pistol in hand should not be expected to look like Mr. Clean. Unless we’re watching movies made about Generals George Custer or Patton, all spiffy guys!

Those of us who fought this “Frito Bandito” image battle for years thought we had made great progress. We believed and had faith that media by now would be more sensitive, and treat its fellow human beings with equal dignity. Villa (like many military commanders on either side of a war), I’m certain was no saint. People do strange things they normally would not do during war. War is Hell! We see horrific evidence of this in Iraq. Albeit the removing of despots throughout the world is a noble calling, today’s media focus is more on the gore and residual infallibility of humans engaged in any war. If it bleeds, it leads!

Yet, when it’s convenient for politicos to justify war, they depend on media to engender national pride by showcasing stories about valiant soldiers such as former NFL football player, Pat Tillman, who died by friendly fire in Iraq. Tillman was justifiably lionized in the media for his bravery and his commitment to his country. Many honorable men and woman also died defending the liberation of Mexico, as so many thousands upon thousands have for their respective countries.

We can’t expect to showcase each and every one of them, but certainly, we can tell their story without perpetuating stereotypes we all hoped had died a long time ago.

Fritos anyone?

Barack Is Cut From A Political

Cloth, Not From A Prophetic One

By Joe Ortiz

As a person who formerly functioned as an evangelist (1979 to 1985), I had the privilege of preaching at many of the predominately black churches in South Central Los Angeles. Also, as one who was deeply involved in the civil rights movement (from 1969 through 1999) I also had the privilege of working with mostly African Americans in the South Central Los Angeles, as well. One of those efforts was serving as the press deputy for then California State Senator Diane Watson when she ran for the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors in 1992 against Yvonne Burke, a former US Congresswoman.

Obviously during the campaign, I always went along with Senator Watson whenever she had speaking engagements throughout the district, which consisted of visitation to many of the predominately black churches in South Central Los Angeles. One of the things that I noticed during those church visits was that the style of preaching at predominately black churches was centered on liberation theology and the social gospel. I also visited several Latino churches as well as many Anglo Pentecostal churches and, while the Latino and Anglo Pentecostal worship services were highly demonstrative (speaking in tongues, dancing, etc.), they did not have that unique "whooping" style that is solely endemic to black churches.

The black church is known throughout most African American communities for its focus on social gospel issues, including equality, jobs, education, etc. During moments of crisis the black church is also where local residents go to meet and discuss issues surrounding a variety of events, as it did after the August 29, 1992 not guilty verdict that was rendered in the famed Rodney King case, where he was assaulted by LAPD officers. Immediately after the verdict came in, the city was tense and eventually broke out into the infamous 1992 LA City Riots.

I was among the many local community (and the only Latino) and LA City leaders who joined together at the famous First AME church in downtown Los Angeles, a church recognized as one of (if not the) top black churches in Los Angeles to discuss ways to stem the violence in the event the verdict on the Rodney King beatings were not favorable.

The predominately black establishment (Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley, LA City Councilmen Mark Ridley Thomas and Michael Woo), the only Asian, and many other black leaders and elected officials gathered together during the moments leading up to the verdict in an attempt to quell the violence if it should erupt. The church was lead by the legendary Pastor, the honorable Reverend Cecil Murray.

I say all of this to establish a backdrop to my involvement in the African American community for over thirty years, a proud life’s journey that has made me feel like an honorary member of not only the African American community, but of its churches as well.

Knowing the heart and soul of this proud community, I now find it immensely difficult to believe that the recent remarks by Senator Barack Obama, where he states he did not hear any of the incendiary speeches being made by his Pastor of 20 years, is a denial that rings a shallow note on the political harpsichord.

There is no way Obama can convince many politicos and pundits (in the know) that he is telling the truth about how close of an association he had (or did not have) with Reverend Wright.

In addition to his deep relationship with Reverend Wright, most of the people Obama associated with throughout his community organizing work in Chicago, he had to interface often with the local community leaders and street folks who basically have felt they have been denied the opportunities to become members of the predominate community and share in the American dream. There is still much pain in black communities throughout America. This is why most African Americans are supporting Barack Obama, who is one of theirs!

But Barack is being disingenuous when he renounces Reverend Wright, a person who he was close to for twenty years. You don’t sit together for a cup of coffee with a "brother" without making a few remarks about "the man."  I can understand why the Reverend Wright is upset and believes Obama threw him under the bus for political expediency!

But, what most of the public and media fail to understand is where the Reverend really stands on this entire matter. To him, this is not about Obama and his campaign; it’s about Reverend Wright’s mandate from God. He spoke about this on his interview with Bill Moyers. Wright reiterated his comments to Moyers when he delivered that controversial sermon where he yelled most vociferously, "God Damn America!"

However, Wright continued to share more of his comments to Moyers where he goes on and states:" God is the giver of life. Let me tell you what that means. That means we have no right to take a life whether as a gang-banger living the thug life, or as a President lying about leading a nation into war. We have no right to take a life! Whether through the immorality of a slave trade, or the immorality of refusing HIV/AIDS money to countries or agencies who do not tow your political line! We have no right to take a life!"

What most media pundits and commentators do not understand (nor many members of the cloth, for that matter) is that Wright was expressing God’s indignation by rebuking the behavior of this country. This is why Reverend Wright chose to share his views in Detroit and with Moyer’s program. He felt he had to stand up during these various media appearances and make a profound clarification; not for his personal sake, reputation or for the political whim and expedience of the Obama campaign, but for God!

Dr. Marvin A. McMickle, who earned his doctorate from Princeton Theological Seminary, [and an author and pastor of Antioch Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio], has written a great book entitled "Where Have All The Prophets Gone? (Reclaiming Prophetic Preaching in America), where he presents volumes of scripture-based facts that prove the American church has lost its prophetic voice. He said it has been replaced by mostly a prosperity and social gospel. It lacks the prophetic preaching of justice and equality:

"When the Southern Christian Leadership Conference organized in 1957, it did so with a clear mission statement’ to redeem the soul of America’, said McMickle.

"The people who gathered in Atlanta for that founding event were essentially a group of preachers who were possessed by a prophetic zeal for justice and righteousness. Their focus was not simply on the Fourteenth Amendment and equal protection under the law; their focus was on the Exodus story and on God sending Moses to Pharaoh with the words, ‘Let my people go."

McMickle went on to say that out of the tradition of biblical prophets, God blessed our nation with the presence of preachers such as Martin Luther King, Jr (who said "America is the greatest perpetrator of violence in the world today"), James Lawson, Ralph Abernathy and many other men of God who were willing to lay down their own lives (as King did) to speak forth God’s word of justice and righteousness.

In essence, Reverend Jeremiah Wright was speaking boldly (with great risk since he has already been threatened with bodily harm) about injustice and unrighteousness that pervades our country’s leadership, especially by its government. He probably didn’t evoke his indignation in a proper language nor in an acceptable tone.

However, neither did the prophets of yesteryear, such as Isaiah, Ezekiel, Jeremiah and other patriarchs in the Old Testament; nor apostles such as Peter, Paul, James and others who were beheaded for speaking the same Gospel of justice and righteousness.

Unfortunately, Barack Obama, who supposedly has been a Christian (for at least 20 years), who supposedly has read his Bible, who supposedly went to church to hear Reverend Wright’s sermons, unfortunately has denied a close friend and mentor for  his own political expediency. He may win the nomination, and even be elected President, but it will not be due to a prophetic calling, but simply a political one.

The sequel to The End Times Passover, Why Christians Will Suffer "Great Tribulation" sees author & scholar Joe Ortiz picking up right where he left off: presenting thoroughly researched, cogent counterpoints to the standard arguments of biblical traditionalists. Just as with his first offering, readers will find Ortiz’s follow up tome quite informative – if not somewhat distressing.

The "tribulation" to which Ortiz refers, of course, is, according to the Christian religion, the time of great suffering that precedes the return of Jesus Christ. Traditionally, theologians and scholars have posited that followers of the Christian faith will be spared when the times of tribulation emerge. Supposedly, all true believers will be instantaneously removed from the earth in a flash, an event commonly known as the "Rapture." Following their deliverance, the world left behind will experience years of agonizing toil and torment, setting the stage for Armageddon (the ultimate battle between good and evil), the defeat of Satan and his armies, and the subsequent eternal reign of the true biblical Kingdom.

In "Tribulation", though, Ortiz presents convincing evidence that followers of the Christian faith will not be so conveniently spared, and he also expounds on the disturbing reasons why. Relying on sound scriptural analysis and well-researched conclusions, Ortiz offers airtight, meticulous explanations regarding the true meanings behind biblical references to the "End Times" – even if such explanations provide little comfort.

In recent times, countless individuals from all walks of life have sought to cast off the stranglehold of traditional religious dogma, instead seeking to learn the truth of all things for themselves. Why Christians Will Suffer "Great Tribulation" is a highly recommended starting point for such disillusioned souls, offering sound, factual interpretations of many previous legends & fables heretofore mistakenly applied. Though it sometimes gets a bit deep for the average casual reader, the strength & power of Ortiz’s arguments make his book required reading for believers and non-believers alike.

Official Apex Reviews Interview: Joseph Ortiz (The End Times Passover, Why Christians Will Suffer Great Tribulation)

Apex Reviews: Joe, thanks for joining us for this interview. We’re looking forward to learning more about your books.

You spent over 20 years researching and compiling both books. Why are you so passionate about the topics you address, and where does that passion come from?

Joseph Ortiz: My passion comes from my early life, one where I have always been inquisitive about all things. My schoolmates used to tease me about my always asking the teachers questions, inferring I was kissing up to them. I wasn’t, I genuinely wanted answers. Secondly it also came from my experiences as a journalist, and my disappointment to find that not all we read in newspapers (and books), see on television or hear on the radio is true.

Therefore, when I first became a Christian (in 1975) I got really excited because my pastors and Bible teachers told me that God is truth and the Bible is His true word. However, when I started reading various Christian books and commentaries, I saw great differences between their books and the Bible. So who was I to trust, the commentators or the Bible?

Well, the Bible itself states (in 2 Timothy 3:16-17) that all ’scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.’ Therefore I had to trust what the Bible says. However, believing and trusting what the Bible says and being able to interpret it correctly, meant that I had to dig deep and study key words correctly to understand their exact meaning. So, how did I find out what certain words truly meant? For one thing, I used an etymological approach.

What is Etymology? Etymology is the history of a linguistic form as a word shown by tracing its development since its earliest recorded occurrence in the language where it is found, by tracing its transmission from one language to another, by analyzing it into its component parts, by identifying its cognates in other languages, or by tracing it and its cognates to a common ancestral form in an ancestral language.

Without belaboring my answer to your initial question, I’ll use the etymological example of the word "left" as is used in Luke 17:34, which is the basis for Tim LaHaye’s Left Behind thesis, that sinners will be "left behind" at the Rapture and believers will be "taken" to heaven for seven years while all hell breaks loose here on earth. If examined carefully (through an etymological approach) we find that the word "left" actually means "to forgive;" therefore, LaHaye’s premise that bad folks are left behind and believers are taken to heaven has no biblical nor academic foundation whatsoever. That one example alone should debunk LaHaye’s Left Behind doctrine; however, I have about 150 other examples in my two books to nail shut LaHaye’s Left Behind doctrinal coffin once and for all.

AR: After all the years of research and analysis, at what point did you decide it was finally time to bring the book to the light of day?

JO: I actually finished the manuscript around 1999; however from 2000 to 2004, I perused these two books over and over and over again, cross-checking, cross-referencing the data to the point of exhaustion. Finally, around May of 2004, I felt a peace about the information I present in these two books, and decided to place them on the Internet, developed a web site and began giving it away for free. After about three years, I decided to send it out to publishers to get more exposure and Author House Publishers became my official publisher.

AR: You offer very sound scriptural and historical evidence to back up your various claims. How were you able to come to such definitive conclusions?

JO: Once again, by using the etymological approach, figures of speech, Hebrew and Greek dictionaries, concordances, as well as reading hundreds of books on the same subject, mostly written by premillenial dispensationalists (like Tim LaHaye, John Hagee, John Walvoord, Hal Lindsey) and others who believe in the Pre-Tribulation Rapture and Left Behind doctrine. I began to examine what those writers claimed and matched their data to the Bible’s and it didn’t jibe. Actually, I was hoping their thesis could be confirmed because I kind of like the idea of a being whisked to heaven while all hell breaks loose here on earth. But that will not the case.

AR: Please share with our readers precisely why you think followers of the Christian faith will have to endure the "Great Tribulation"?

JO: The apostle Paul told us (in the book of Acts 14:22) that we must go through much tribulation in order to enter into the kingdom of God; but unfortunately, way too many Christians today would rather believe we are immune to persecution mainly because we are Christians. I provide a great amount of scripture, especially in "Why Christians Will Suffer Great Tribulation," to show that today’s believer is not immune to persecution. For that matter, hundreds of thousands of Christians throughout the world are suffering great tribulation as we speak; however, American Christians, especially, believe that we will be protected from persecution because (up to recently, when we experienced 911) we have become accustomed to a predominately secure life in the USA. Many American Christians rightly believe what is stated in 1 Thessalonians 4:9, which is that Christians are not appointed to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, which is true. However, there is a big difference between God’s wrath on the unbeliever and the antichristian world’s persecution of Christians. We are and have been destined for persecution. Why should modern day Christians receive greater treatment from the world than the millions who have been martyred for Christ throughout history?

AR: Our reviewer noted that, while informative, many of your claims are quite disturbing. Have you gotten any reactions from readers who think that your approach is too depressing or amounts to "doomsday prophecy"? If so, what has been your response?

JO: Yes, I have gotten a lot of heat from many who say that we (Christians) are not destined for wrath. Listen, truly walking with Christ is not going to be a picnic in the park. Christ told us to pick up our cross and follow Him. The cross is an instrument of death. We (Christians) are coming to a point in history where we will be asked by world oppressors to renounce our faith, or to choose between Christ and the world. You can read about these accounts where Christians are being killed today because they are standing up for Jesus in countries like China, Bangladesh, Indonesia, etc. In other words, are we American Christians prepared to die for standing up for Christ rather than serve another god, such as the gods of money, military and political power, or other heathen religions?

I share a great example of this with my readers in my second book (Why Christians Will Suffer Great Tribulation), where I speak about three guys (Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego) who would not serve King Nebuchadnezzar’s gods or worship the image of gold he had set up. They were given a choice: Honor the king’s giant gold statue or be thrown in the fiery furnace. The three guys responded and said they didn’t need to defend themselves before the King in this matter. They told the King that if they are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God they serve is able to save them from it, and he will rescue them. The amazing thing is what they said next.

’Even if God does not save, we want you to know, king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.’

King Nebuchadnezzar got furious with these three fanatics he ordered the furnace heated seven times hotter than usual and commanded some of the strongest soldiers in his army to tie up the three servants and threw them into the blazing furnace. The king’s command was so urgent and the furnace so hot that the flames of the fire killed the soldiers who took these three men, firmly tied, and pushed them into the blazing furnace.

The end result is the three guys didn’t burn.

This particular story is an example of a theme that is repeated throughout the Bible, where we see patriarchs like Noah, Daniel, Joshua, David, et al who are divinely protected by God when they place their complete trust in Him. These examples are what my books are based upon, that God is able to rescue His children without having to Rapture them to heaven. God takes us through trials, not out of them. Will some Christians die from persecution? Yes, thousands have throughout history and thousands today and that many more tomorrow. But, like the Apostle Stephen, the first Christian martyr in history, those who give their lives so others can live, as Christ did, will be rewarded in greater fashion than those who cower as tribulation increases.

AR: We can only imagine the kinds of criticisms you’ve had to endure as a result of the points you make. Have you encountered much resistance from religious traditionalists?

JO: Yes! Those who believe in the Left Behind and Pre-Tribulation Rapture doctrines are pretty adamant about their belief system. I have challenged them to read the book and then respond. They say they haven’t the time, or they are convinced their belief system is sound enough. Yet, I have been blessed by those who have read the books and we have received from them glowing testimonies, including folks like Dave MacPherson, Rick Wiles, and Richard Deem and now from Dominique Sessons.

At the beginning (as I was conducting my initial research back in 1984) I could not find anyone who had written about the same evidence I present in my two books. Only recently (in the last 4 to 5 years) have I found other authors that have come to basically the same conclusions as I do, including authors such as Steve Wohlberg, Ted Noel, Stephen Sizer, Barbara Rossing and other emerging writers.]

AR: In light of all the resounding evidence that you present, what advice can you offer to those who still refuse to abandon the traditionalist dogma that was inculcated into them at an early age?

JO: Goodness! It’s very difficult to change people’s minds about their current belief system, which makes my work seem even slower and harder. Yet, those folks who have taken the time to read all the sound evidence I provide have come back and said they now have a greater understanding of God’s end times program. I would encourage them to at least read the book, and then come back and share with me their concerns. If they can present evidence that refutes what I have presented, and it can be proven vis a vis the etymological approach I took, then I would consider making corrections. I tell folks that my books are not the end of the eschatological debate that still roars in evangelical circles. However, those who are secure about their relationship with God have no need to fear or listen to another point of view. If anything, I believe they will grow in greater faith!

AR: What has your experience been like with Author House?

JO: Good! I have a strong background in journalism and working as a publicist; therefore, after they sent out their initial press release about my books, I chose to handle those duties myself. A book, as you well know, is like your child; you know it best and also know the character and image of the books you want to project to the public.

AR: You’ve actually been involved in quite a number of different activities over the course of your life. Please share more with our readers about Joseph Ortiz, the man of many talents.

JO: Goodness! I believe (more so now) that God has His hand on me from an early age. Not that I was a religious person throughout my life. Other than a few years of Catholic training up to my early teens, I burned the candle at both ends until I accepted Christ in 1975, which was a major turning point in my life. Another turning point in my life came earlier when I landed on KABC Talk Radio in 1971. I wasn’t looking for a broadcasting career; I was just at the right place at the right time. Someone threw me the broadcasting football and I’ve been running towards the goal line ever since. I parlayed that opportunity into a very successful broadcasting, civil service, teaching and public relations career. However, throughout that entire journey, I was consumed with researching and writing this book. There were years where I spent 80 percent of my time to the project, and other times 30 to 40 percent due to supporting a family. However, from June 2000 until May of 2004, while I managed a homeless shelter in Palm Springs for 16 hours a day, seven days a week for about three and a half years without a day off, after work, totally exhausted, that’s when I studied and wrote the best portions of the book. God had my attention like never before and that’s when the books illuminated.

After I finished the final editing (in May 2004) I shared the manuscripts with renown authors like Ralph Woodrow and Dave MacPherson (experts in the eschatological genre), who read the books and encouraged me to get them out there.

Now, I’m semi-retired but still do some writing for various magazines and newspapers throughout the country; a little PR for charities that deal with drug abuse, homelessness and unwed mothers, and I also manage a few blogs and my two web sites, promoting the books every chance I get.

AR: How can our readers learn more about you, your writings, and your various other efforts?

JO: I would refer them to either one of my two web sites and all they need to know (and more) is accessible:

AR: Any final thoughts you’d like to share?

JO: Yes! We are living in precarious times. The world is rapidly changing as never before. Many Christians especially believe that the answer lies with new leadership and new changes in our government and then things will turn out alright. What I have been fortunate to have learned (having spent over 30 years in the political arena) is that mankind’s problems will never be solved by governments or any secular philosophy. And it won’t be changed either by those professing Christians who promote strong military might to solve the world’s problems, or attempting to rid ourselves from the implied threat from radical fundamentalists and religious zealots, whether they hoist and carry a purported Christian, Judaic or Muslim banner.

My two books provide the evidence as to what believers should be doing today, and what their attitude should be concerning their family, community and members of their congregation. It describes the reality the God does not want His children to play church or religion, but rather to serve those closest to them. To do whatever they can to help them carry their crosses as well as our own. It’s not going to be easy. But, as the famous Apostle Paul stated in Romans 8:36-39, while portions of my books may appear like gloom and doom, people have to keep it all in perspective, because everything turns out OK in the end: "As it is written, for your sake we face death all day long. We are considered as sheep to be slaughtered. No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

AR: Thanks again, Joe, and best of continued success to you in all your endeavors!

JO: My pleasure!
